Learn. Play. Grow. Share.
For Marji Shelton, nothing in the world compares to helping others grow as musicians. Her love for piano and experiencing the joy of music has been a part of her for as long as she can remember. Performing was her initial way of sharing music. Naturally, she received a bachelor's degree in Piano Performance at the University of Oklahoma. Little did she know that this was just the beginning. Marji first began teaching during her undergraduate studies at a local music and arts academy for young children. The more she taught, the more she learned that she was born to teach. Continuing on this new career path, she pursued a dual master's degree in Piano Pedagogy and Performance, where she was able to teach private and group piano classes to college-aged students at OU. Marji flourished in this environment and realized her enthusiasm for teaching piano to students of all ages. Upon completing her graduate studies in 2015, she established Marji's Piano Studio in the heart of Norman, Oklahoma and has relocated to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 2019. To further her own studies, she is currently pursuing a second master's degree in piano performance at Oklahoma State University, where she holds a teaching and accompaniment assistantship.
During her time at the University of Oklahoma, Marji held a graduate teaching assistantship in group and applied piano and was granted multiple scholarships and awards, including the Jewel Nelson Luccock Memorial Award and Scholarship, the Ruth Moore Memminger Piano Scholarship, and the Outstanding Senior Piano Major Award. She studied piano pedagogy under Dr. Jane Magrath and Dr. Barbara Fast, and her piano teachers have included Dr. Jeongwon Ham, Dr. Ed Gates, Stephanie Shames, and Jolene Bolin.
Performance continues to kindle Marji’s dedication to music and plays a vital role in various avenues of her career. As a solo pianist, she has performed regularly in several recitals, concerts, and charity events, such as the St. Thomas More Lunchtime Recitals. Abroad performances include the 2012 Classical Music Festival in Eisenstaedt, Austria where she participated in a masterclass featuring Alan Chow and performed in Haydnsaal at the Esterházy Palace. Additionally, she attended the Vienna International Piano Academy in Austria in 2014 and studied with Krassimira Jordan, Wolfgang Watzinger, and Stephan Möller. As a chamber musician, she has accompanied many instrumentals and vocalists and worked in ensembles, her most memorable being a five movement work for two piano, two percussion entitled “This is the World We Know” by David Maslanka. Marji continues to seek out unique performance opportunities for herself and her students.
Marji leads a devoted life of teaching and performing piano. Sharing the gift of music with others is her true calling. In addition, Marji is an Independent Consultant with Arbonne International and owns a health and wellness business, allowing her to help and encourage others to live their healthiest lives. In her spare time, Marji enjoys running, hiking, biking, rock climbing, eating yummy food, and spending time with family, friends, and her little furry friends Mac and Mr. Junebug!
